El sábado 14 de abril de 1990, estábamos Dulce María Loynaz y yo sentados en el portal de su casona de 19 y E, en el Vedado, conversando. Eran poco más o menos las cinco y media de la tarde. Le había llevado un trabajo escrito por mí sobre ella y su familia. Me pidió se lo leyera. Así lo hice cuidando la dicción, las pausas, la entonación, pues fama tenia la escritora de ser una admirable lectora. Al terminar, me solicitó el libreto mecanografiado y sin decir palabras extrajo de un bolsillo un bolígrafo, escribiendo: Hoy he visto desfilar mi vida, como dicen que la ven algunos en el trance de su muerte. Mi vida ha pasado - viva - a través de la palabra de Aldo Martínez Malo. No sé si debo agradecerlo; solo sé que ha sido así.
Me emocionó la dedicatoria, no era para menos, pero noté que sobre su regazo descansaba una libreta gruesa. Indagué sobre ella y con su inexplicable sonrisa me la entregó, diciendo: Esa era una sorpresa que le tenia deparada para su insaciable curiosidad.
La cogí rápidamente y la abrí, recorriendo página tras página. Era su letra inconfundible. Era su epistolario, donde se leían nombres que en un momento determinado formaron parte de su mundo, un mundo del cual ella es de las pocas sobrevivientes.
Fue un sábado verdaderamente de gloria, pues no podia imaginar que me hiciera un regalo tan preciado y precioso. Recuerdo que cerca de las nueve de la noche abandoné la casa, apretando contra el pecho la libreta, cuidándola de cualquier imprevisto accidente. Así la mantuve hasta que dos horas y media después llegaba a mi casa de Pinar del Río.
